What we do
Home Maintenance and Repairs: HMR, does exactly what it says it does.

Small jobs & more, multi-skilled, or plain hard work. Plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drains, garden refurbishment and clearance, locks, door furnishings, fittings, repairs, setting up equipment from new, upgrading, decorating, sealing, clearing, cleaning, insulating, installing, changing, improving, all the smaller jobs around a home, garden or small business.

Handy to have on call. Handy men. Handypeople.

Not DIY, but DFY (Done For You). We Do It FOR You.

Plumbing

Lots of small jobs come up in any home or business from the leaking tap or connection to plumbing in the washing machine or dishwasher to cutting a vent for a tumble dryer or kitchen extractor unit.

Stopping leaking taps and putting thermostatic valves on radiators can save you money.

Fitting easy use, lever taps, for example, can make life easier.

Checking tanks and connections can save major problems in future.
Electrical Back to Top

We all get to the point of wanting to change light fittings, change broken covers or fittings, replace covers for newer, setting up new equipment, installing time switches, cleaning out light covers, or whatever. These jobs suit HMR.

For example, just changing light bulbs to Compact Fluorescent Lamps will save you money. Have you ever worked out the cost / impact of lighting?

Fitting time controllers, for example, can make life easier.

Checking existing arrangements and maybe checking current loadings on circuits can save major problems in future. (Especially as there is a tendency for more equipment and multi loading on a supply can quickly lead to problems.)

Garden & Outside works

The outside of any property comes in for a “bashing” from the weather and people. And to use the old Adage “A stitch in time saves…” This is so very true. Gutters, gates, fencing, sealing, roofing, hedges, borders, lawns etc.

Gardens often need a ‘trim' beyond the usual after a while, we can do both the “usual” and the extra. One of our clients recently had a demand from the Council to “Cut back the hedge to the property line, where it overhangs the footpath, within 7 days or we will do it for you and levy a charge in line with our normal…” The Council suggested a price in excess of £500 over two days, we did it in one day at half the price.

Stopping gutters leaking can save you money not just in future repair costs but in heating bills as damp walls, suck out heat from your home, as well as encouraging fungal infestation, with all that implies.

Checking on the security of fixings on say fencing and the condition of say a shed roof would save major inconvenience, in future bad weather. Simple checks on the fabric of your property would reveal problems when they are starting and before they become too expensive, such as cracked or missing mortar seals on roof / tile edges or say sagging structure lines, where internal supports are weakening with age (often results in leaks).

Simple gardening or landscaping measures can often improve our enjoyment of our property without too much disruption or for that matter expense. For example, in the winter of 2000, a property in North Petherton, Somerset was suffering from continual puddles on the lawn of the back garden, the grass was dying off and it was, in effect, out of use. A ‘soak away', with additional drainage took less than a day to construct and there has never been a puddle since. The grass survives and the occupiers can use their garden all year round. Not a major job, but major benefits to the user.

Safety and Security Back to Top

This is usually something we all tend to take a little “for granted”. A simple external view can help especially with the simplicity of fitting and testing where fitted, door security, gates, fences, security lights, door locks, window locks etc.

Taking time out or an external view to consider things such as “Is the main door lock up to the current BSI standard. And of at least 5 levers. Because if not, you may not be insured, can and will save you money.

Fitting simple things like door chains, and viewers can make life safer, while grab handles and ramps etc. can make life a little easier.

Checking against deterioration say for effectiveness of smoke and CO2 alarms (These have a defined replacement life as the internal reactive agent, loses its capacity), checking effectiveness could save your life.

Inside works
From putting up shelves to changing bathroom and toilet fittings, hanging pictures and assembling flat pack furniture, these jobs make life more comfortable.

Installing some or more loft insulation and or putting insulation to hot water pipes can save you money.

Checking on the security of fixings can save accidents if something is working loose or the fixing itself is deteriorating.

  • HMR specialize by providing a multi-skilled approach and not taking on big jobs.
  • HMR specialize in reports for home and business owners focussing on saving money.
  • HMR do not undertake major new or rebuilding works. No extensions. No re-roofing. No re-wiring. No heating boilers.

  • HMR is local to you in Somerset and Devon
All homes and every small business premises needs some work from time to time.

Many jobs are small and do not require expensive specialist staffs. Often, the jobs “build up” and need “A bit of plumbing, a bit of electrical work, a bit of woodwork, maybe some landscaping or replacing as well as repairing etc”.

Traditional craftspeople are in short supply, can be difficult to find and difficult to get hold of, most will not multi task, or take on works outside their own specialism, (Electricians will avoid changing a toilet connection, plumbers avoid changing light fittings etc.)

Not everybody wants to “Do it themselves” (DIY), many prefer DFY, or Done For You, but then, they prefer one call to do it all.

The problem is usually finding somebody you can trust to do the jobs.

HMR was set up to overcome these problems. So, for those smaller jobs, which can build up, you can call an experienced, professional, value for money service at Home Maintenance and Repairs, so that you spend your time on what you prefer to do.

About the business Back to Top

The first thing for HMR was to consider what they would want as customers:

  • Somebody you could easily get hold of.
  • Somebody who does what they say they will do.
  • Somebody with experience and maturity.
  • People who are reliable.
  • People who practice time keeping.
  • Somebody who can deliver a dependable service through dependable people.
  • People who are responsible.
  • People who are multi-skilled.
  • A service that is simple and easy to access and use.
  • A service that provides value for money
  • A service in which one can have confidence.
  • People with professionalism and honesty.

Isn't that what we all want?

HMR are local people; in and from Somerset and Devon and they follow these principles:

  • If we say we can; it means we can.
  • If we say we will; it means we will.
  • We do not tell you one thing and then do another or worse, not do it at all.
  • We do not waste time, yours or ours.
  • Where charges are simple, open and explained.
  • If there are supply or contractor difficulties, we will tell you, not ignore it.
  • If we find a bigger problem, we tell you.
  • If the job takes less time, we reduce the charge.
  • We do not want problems, nor do you so we “Make it so”.

Reports designed to save you money Back to Top

HMR take their professional role a step further by offering a unique report service to customers so that they can get an idea of what might become an issue in the future and what any impact might be and why it would be an issue in the first place.

Currently there are three reports available.

This could be, for example, (Reproduced with the permission of the report commissioner, a modern detached house in good condition, built in 1993 with plastic rain water goods, fitted to wooden supporting structure, over a cavity wall, under a modern, simple pre-formed truss roof).

“ The gutters are full of leaf debris and need clearing out before winter rainfalls or water will continue to overflow down the back board and from there onto the wall. Within three years the wood that the gutters are fixed to will begin to rot and thereafter require repair / replacing. It is directly attached to the bottom of the roof trusses. If left untreated the water penetration will reach and then damage the wall plate which secures the roof trusses to the wall. This will result, eventually in rot to the roof truss bottom sections, localised fixings and thus lead eventually to failure of the roof (This would take many years).

NB. IF this is seen as a defect in maintaining your home, your insurance may not cover the repairs.

IF there is a connection in the wall cavity, (there are usually several) damp patches will occur inside the house, with heat loss and a recurring need to redecorate. If left, the plaster will need to be replaced and could promote fungal type rot to interior woodwork, with all that that entails.”

1.   Simple money saving measures

A short form report providing advice and observations for future consideration upon items such as draught proofing, insulation, fittings and usage / consumption patterns, with an indication of the effect in cash terms of change.

2.   Simple Security & Safety measures.

A short report highlighting the key simple measures that could be taken to improve safety and security in and around the home. Notes on the suitability of existing security fittings against modern BSI and General Insurance requirements (E.g. Anything less than 5 lever mortice deadlock on a front door normally is not adequate for insurance purposes).

3.   Planned maintenance for households and small businesses

This report comes from the old saying “A stitch in time saves…..” In case of a home, a lot of money. A more comprehensive consideration of most aspects of the home with a suggested schedule for inspections and rectifications, together with comments to allow the home owner to assess the situation in the comfort of their own home and own time scales.

We do those jobs that always need doing around the home.
